A two-stage evaporative cooling system, also known as an Indirect Direct Evaporative Cooling System (IDEC), is a highly efficient and eco-friendly alternative to traditional air conditioning. This system combines Indirect Evaporative Cooling (IEC) and Direct Evaporative Cooling (DEC) to deliver cool, fresh air while minimizing energy consumption and moisture levels.
Unlike standard air conditioners that rely on refrigerants and compressors, the two-stage system uses water and airflow principles to provide effective temperature reduction, making it an ideal solution for industrial ventilation, large manufacturing units, food processing facilities, and industrial kitchens.
In the first stage, warm outside air passes through a polymeric, cross-flow plate-type heat exchanger, where it indirectly transfers heat to a thin film of water without gaining any moisture. The water and air travel in separate channels, which is why it’s called “indirect” cooling. A secondary air stream helps evaporate the water and remove the heat. The result? The primary air is cooled without increasing its humidity.
The semi-cooled air from stage one then enters the second stage, where it flows through water-saturated cooling pads. Here, it undergoes further cooling and picks up a small amount of moisture, delivering cool, filtered air into the space. Despite this added humidity, the system still maintains lower relative humidity (typically below 60%) compared to conventional direct evaporative coolers.
According to ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), a two-stage evaporative cooling system consumes 60–75% less energy compared to refrigerant-based air conditioners. This makes it a cost-effective, sustainable, and low-maintenance solution especially in hot and dry climates like most parts of India.
Two-stage evaporative coolers use a fraction of the power required by traditional AC systems, reducing electricity bills by up to 75%.
The indirect stage allows cooling without moisture, while the direct stage offers additional cooling with controlled humidity, making it more comfortable for occupants.
These systems supply 100% outdoor air, enhancing indoor air quality and meeting ventilation standards. Designed for 25–35 ACPH (Air Changes Per Hour), they’re ideal for industries needing high airflow volumes.
No refrigerants, no greenhouse gases just natural cooling with water and air. A perfect fit for green buildings and LEED-compliant projects.
The initial investment is lower than HVAC systems, and the minimal maintenance makes it budget-friendly in the long run.
